Even if you continue to work and learn within your discipline in the future, you will also need to be able to think \u2018outside\u2019 your discipline with skills such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>critical thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>independent thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interdisciplinary thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reflexive practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reasoning and formulating an argument<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thinking and imagining with compassion and empathy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>building on your own prior experience and your internal resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>building on the prior experience and resources of others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tolerating uncertainty, complexity and dilemmas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"85\" height=\"85\" src=\"http:\/\/changemakerslearning.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-150\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on &#8230; reflexive practice<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Developing reflexive practice allows you to engage not only with the thing that you are learning, but also with the actual process of learning itself. <br><br>You will become aware of what you find easy or hard, how well you complete different aspects of a task and how you perform in different types of situation. <br><br>This allows you to then incorporate what you have observed about yourself into your continuing learning experience to further develop your learning potential:<br><br>&#8211; It\u2019s about noticing what is going well and what is not going so well. <br><br>&#8211; It\u2019s thinking about how to get the most out of each and every learning experience<br><br>&#8211; It\u2019s using your self-observation to try to improve your performance<br><br>&#8211; You are not alone in working reflexively \u2013 we include many opportunities in all our classes to discuss your progress and experiences with your colleagues and lecturers&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Last Updated 23rd September 2025<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you devote yourself to developing expertise in just one subject, you tend to get very good at the types of thinking required in that particular subject and might not get many opportunities to develop and practice different types of thinking.
